Watch out for tree parts
I know Christi will not allow this to be posted, but I must try anyways as it is dangerous to classic ski right now. I was skiing with a 76 year old man, who is an excellent skier, he won his age group at the Birki last year and he hit numerous tree parts, finally falling when he hit a pine cone. His girlfriend who is a great athlete in her own right, she won the Hard Rock 100 I think 5 or 6 times was also taken down by the tree parts in the trails. I almost went down myself numerous times and I was an okay skier in my day, winning Jr. nationals, being on the US Ski team for many years, and being an All American in college. Please groom more often than every 4 or 5 days as it becomes VERY dangerous.

Great grooming on Ward Trail today, January 15, 2025. Thank you GMNC! Classic track is present over most of the route. It was nice to see so many skiers and snowshoe trekkers enjoying a beautiful day at Ward!
Ward trails drifted and wind blown
Fresh snow is beautiful and the Ward trails had 3-4” of ungroomed snow with some deeper drifts. Great for a dog ski on our scale skis. Sun wants to poke out, it could be a nice afternoon

Beauty grooming at County Line trailhead for our first ski jore attempt in the dogs new harness. Dog loop and trails were in great shape. Blustery and cold thought at the end of the day

Nice conditions on Ward Trail System
It was great to see so many skiers and snowshoe trekkers enjoying the Skinned Horse and Ward Trails today, December 29, 2024. Most all trails on the Ward System were well tracked. Thanks to the GMNC for maintaining the trail signs and trail makers, especially on the backcountry trails, like Skinned Horse. The attached photo from Skinned Horse Overlook shows the West Elk Mountains (photo taken December 29).
Blustery trail conditions
It’s frostbite weather up there, and you may find wind-blown trails. Mittens, snow gator or scarf, long johns, all that good stuff. And expect green-wax slow skiing. On the other hand, the swirling snow can be fun to travel in, and it’s what Colorado mountains are about.

You can go almost anywhere off trail without breaking through. Harry too.
Be Considerate
Please have some common sense out there. Someone stood in the tracks (skis perpendicular to both tracks) on Scales Road, and watched me going quickly downhill with no effort to move. I was able to finally jump out of the tracks, but not able to recover from being off balance and crashed. A whiplashed neck and head bruises left me wondering why that person simply skied away from an injured skier. Thanks to the people who showed up later.
